Assignment feedback

I sent this one in Monday evening and Tuesday lunch time I had my feedback! I was a little worried I’d missed the mark completely and the time taken to say it was rubbish was reflected by the speedy turnaround. No need to worry, it was well received! I had to rush of to the dictionary to look up sagacity though, just to be sure.

There were a few questions asked about the cover, which I hadn’t included with the submission - the first page included in the submission was blank, so it was felt that there needed to be a little something to make the viewer pick it up. That was just going to be the inside cover though, and whilst the hardcover will be plain, there will be something there to tell you what it is.

The use of small images interspersed with full bleed seemed to go down well, meeting my intensions. It was described as being like the end of a game world, forcing you to turn back, so yeah - that was what I wanted. So the portfolio seems to work. Relax….

I also included a draft of a course recap - a form of dissertation if you like, and circa 5000 words of what I’d been through and why I’d made the choices I had. That was well received too, and whilst it was draft and will no doubt be tweaked before the end, there’s a feeling of relief that I was on the right footing. It doesn’t mention this in the course notes as a requirement, but it’s widely accepted it should be there.

So, now it’s just tidying things up and getting things ready for the November assessment.

Alternative layout

OK, so maybe I haven’t finished with the layout, or maybe I’ll submit 2 for the final assignment.

I’ve made a few changes, moving a couple of images around in the sequence and changing one too. I think this might be a less demanding view, certainly in terms of some of the associations and the flow of images, but something I was trying to get across might be a little weaker now.

Anyway, it’s
here.

Now I’ll go back to finishing the initial draft of my course notes…

Layout proposal

I’ve been playing with layouts for a little while now, and I think I’ve come up with something I’m happy with. Happy with for the time being at least. I can see that, whilst I may have thought about something that was a little different (with colour bands across the white space, etc.), I’ve actually reverted to something much more traditional, much simpler. That way, it doesn’t detract from the images, and it’s the images that do the talking instead.

The sequencing I’ve used isn’t chronological, but rather one that hopefully reflects my journey, forming a metaphor for the experience I’ve had. I looked for discovery and integration with a society, but was actually frustrated in my attempts. I tried to do something that wasn’t really me. I was coming to this conclusion anyway, especially after talking to Gary Penny, but Clive turned things around and I now feel much more sympathetic towards the finished collection - it’s no longer me trying to be something else. Without really realising it, I’ve actually been wrestling with the ideas of others and coming up with something else. Clive has pointed me towards that eureka moment when I did finally realise what it was I was trying to say.

Hopefully the series works now, perhaps I’m a little too close to it still, but I can see what I’m trying to say. The question remains whether anyone else can see that though. The latest sequence is
here.

I’m now writing up my notes, so hopefully it will be sent in soon.
